GENERATION Z – BUY MORE VINYL RECORDS THAN MILLENNIALS, NEW STUDY FINDS

A new survey conducted by MRC Data, a data company providing information on music sales, has found that Generation Z buy more vinyl records than their millennial counterparts.

4,041 individuals aged 13 and up were questioned over the course of two weeks about their musical influences, inspirations and purchases, with 15% of Gen Z respondents claiming to have purchased vinyl albums in the previous 12 months. Only 11% of millennials said that they purchased vinyl in the last year.

Members of Gen Z are those born between 1997 and 2015. This puts the age group for Gen Z’ers in the range of 6-24 years old in 2021.

Gen Z is more racially and ethnically diverse than any other generation, and are known as “‘digital natives” for not knowing a world prior to the digital age. This generation is said to be radically impacted by trends that they see online.

Links between music discovery and video games are thought to have arisen as a result of continuing collaborations between musicians and video game developers, with artists such as The Blessed Madonna, Solomun, and Joy Orbison making recent sound cameos in the Grand Theft Auto series.

According to MRC Data, video games were responsible for 28% of Gen Z’s music discovery. Meanwhile, social media was responsible for 51% of new music discovery, with TikTok accounting for 49% of the total.
